I think Jock may be referring to the signing of Ship's Articles.
But I think that the source of this one may not be hard to find - I recall that EF Knight, in "Small Boat Sailing", recommends putting the crew of your yacht on regular Articles. Knight recommends this as a precaution against desertion in a foreign port and mutiny, but John with the literal mindedness of the young would have taken it "straight". John takes this book to Wild Cat Island with him IIRC.
