There is a folk song, I guess American but maybe of English origin, that goes:

Oh the cuckoo, she's a pretty bird,
And she sings as she flies.
But she never hollers cuckoo
Til the fourth day of July.

The fourth of July, of course, being a very important date for Americans,
on which we celebrate having whomped the Brits.
My guess would be that their call changes during nesting or mating season.
