Good description. Ransome had probably been equally full of faith, ten years earlier. If you will excuse a little pedantry, a Chinese lady does not change her name on marriage, although she does to the western world. Consequently her name in China is Soong Ching Ling.

She fared rather better than Ransome's Russian friends. In 1949 she was offered the Presidency of the Kuomintang by the Nationalists and the Vice-Presidency of China by the Communists - she chose the latter:
