I don't think we mind rowing too much but definitely no oaring around. Or as Patrick 'Brian has Laura Fielding, a beautiful Italian lady married to a naval officer, say, "I do not ply the oar" while her husband was held prisoner by the French and many men hovered around seeking favours.
