Clearly those four pines, and just about in the right place, too. I was pretty excited!

The slight problem is that AR was writing more than 60 years ago, and the story was set ten years (at least) earlier than that.

How long does a larch (or a pine tree) stand? I find it hard to believe that a featured row of four trees would survive that long in a recognizable form. Cairns yes, maybe trees in the middle of a village, but trees in a forest? I'd have thought that they'd be lost in later growth...

But I'm not a forester; I'd love to know how fast such a scene would be trsnsformed.
