I've always liked BS & CC, they were among the first ones I read. The plot regarding the D o Gs does seem very plausible - a small community where fingers of suspicion are pointed with no justification is very common, and the added factor that they are 'only children' so there activites are either ignored or a cause for ridicule.
There is also a class/social divide issue - the Ds from an educated city based family befriend the Doctor and the Lawyer's children, but it is the boatbuilding working men's children who get the blame. Not only that the real culprits exploit this to 'transfer' their guilt. A very well observed piece by AR.
