Lippincott published the first books in the US; MacMillan published later ones, at least from SW on. Lippincott put out completely new and different editions; MacMillan used the JC illustrations and all.

As to fixing the page numbering - by all means make your files "right". You're keeping them for your benefit, after all. If you opt to use the table of contents to locate a chapter, instead of doing a full-text search, do you want to be misdirected? It would be one thing to correct (what may appear to American eyes as) a typo in spelling a word where context might admit regional differences (harbor/harbour, for instance); it's another to correct egregious errors like misspelling a proper name, or having an incorrect ToC.
