DST was introduced in Britain in 1907
I looked this up and that particular bit of history looks a bit fuzzy. But as far as I can understand, although daylight Saving time was invented by a New Zealander and attempts were first made to introduce it into Britain, they were always rejected by Parliament until after the Germans adopted it, during WW1.
But as I said, this is from Wikipedia and anyway I may be wrong.
but remember that while it makes the evenings lighter, it makes the mornings darker
I've always found it easier to cope with dark mornings than with dark afternoons. At my increasingly advanced age those push me towards catatonia. But there seems little doubt that, for example, car drivers are more awake on a dark morning that on a dark afternoon (which makes sense as in that case they've just put in a day's work) and I know one of the DoT's reasons for supporting year-round daylight saving time is the lives it would save in the evening rush hour.
