I suggest another reason for the emphasis on public safety. It gives governments more power and authority and, according to Machiavelli, that's what it's all about. I see no end in sight, either. No doubt, the general run of the populatce lives longer, but what's the point when you have to spned the last years of your long life, sitting drooling and staring at the wall in the Sunny Rest Seniors' Home?
