I agree, the 'translation' of Philosopher's Stone to Sorcerer's Stone is
pretty stupid. Americans know what the Philosopher's Stone is! Well,
maybe not ALL Americans, but it's not exactly unheard of here. After
reading this thread, I think if Jake decides he wants to read any of
that series that we will order them from the UK. We had good luck with
ordering from the Internet Bookstore last Christmas (completed our S&A
collection!), so it shouldn't be a problem.
I think I've mentioned before that I do a fair amount of 'translating'
when we're reading AR aloud, just because I've read a lot more contemporary
British popular fiction (mainly mysteries) than David. I think it is
absurd for book editors to do this, though. At most, they should provide
a gloss at the bottom of the page for really foreign words (bangers and
mash for example!).
Maybe if enough Americans let the US publishers know they are purchasing
the books from UK distributors, they might have second thoughts.
