I have just mown the lawn with a Ransome's "Ajax", 12" hand push cylinder mower, such as Nancy would have used.
Ransomes, who still make the larger powered gang cylinder mowers that cut the world's cricket wickets and bowling greens, made a quarter of a million of them between the Thirties and the Seventies, but I'm rather proud of ours because it still has the grass box.
It's a splendid little machine - very easy to sharpen (a drop of grinding paste on the cutter bar and ease the cylinder height down a quarter of a turn. Not at all hard work to push if you look after it - it has rather accurately cut gearing.
I did try cutting out "NO GO" but we have not had enough rain!
