I was going to add that, if you think that Norfolk coots are parochial, you should try Cornish Cousin Jacks ( and Jills) they call anyone from the next parish 'foreign'. (I've lived in both counties and found them very fine)
You don't have to come from an isolated rural community to have narrow horizons. I remember talking to an old lady from Bow in London's East End. She complained about all the foreigners moving into her area. At that time, that part of London was infamous as a stronghold of racist thugs, so I rather wearily pointed out that most of the forgeiners had come all the way from Stepney or Bethnal Green, a mile or so down the road. 'That's what I mean', she said firmly, 'Foreigners.'
