Yes, I would suggest it is an example of Nancy taking on an adult role rather than a specifically female role. She has little interest in the traditionally female aspects of the job of 'hostess' and didn't keep it up for long. What she does manage to keep up reasonably well (in a most Nancy-like, risk-taking manner) is keeping the Ds a secret and keepin ghte GA reasonably happy (and thus protecting her mother).

Of course, I recall Dorothea wonders at one point why Nancy chooses to take so many risks, so the pirate is not absent, but it is certainly a 'growing up' book. Some have suggested that the characters don't grow up in the books, but I've always considered that nonsense: SW, PM and GN are in particular are books about growing up.
