I do have some difficlty in believing the North Pole is at the head of Windermere. Over the years I have collected many postcards of the area from rhe time when AR would have known it prior to writing WH.
So far I have not come across one which would indicate the existance of the NP. If it was there it must have been a very transitory structure, very unlike AR's (perhaps deliberately misleading) description of the old viewhouse that had been there for many years.
Markings in the grass in this area can easily be confused with the remains of the Roman fort of Galeva in the area. These foundations are just below the surface.
According to AR's picture the NP is on higher ground and this would also accord with the description of a viewhouse, unlikely to be in a level field.
