There is a very famous proof reader induced error in early editions of Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness".

The first page contains a reference to "gleams of vanished spirits" on the lower Thames.

What Conrad wrote, describing Thames barges, was, or course, "gleams of varnished sprits" but the proof reader was not nautical.
