Although I have not sailed in the dark on Windermere, I have stood at the end of the pier at Ambleside (passed by the WH rescue party) and looked out in the the pitch black. On a cloudy night with no stars you can see nothing, you are staring into a black void.
I did use a torch to ensure that I did not walk over the end. Switched the torch off and waited for 5 minutes for my eyes to get used to the dark.
