Slater Bob says "your mother's father took me with him..."

And they must have found gold, because Slater Bob was telling the story to prove that he knew exactly what gold looked like.

So Captain Flint's father made his money in gold-mining, but then died young, leaving his sister, the G.A., to bring up his children (Mrs. Blackett and Captain Flint). Or she brought them up because he was off in Africa mining and couldn't look after them.

Not only does this explain how well-off they were, but it's an interesting sidelight on the character of Captain Flint. He either had an absent father, or he lost his father at a young age, and his father was a miner. Could this be a factor in his obsession with going gold-hunting all over the world???

What do you think? Do I get honorary membership in the Big Six or just the Dorothea Callum/Titty Walker Award for imagination???
