Does anyone know how accurately the real Swainson family (that the young Ransome would stay with in Nibthwaite) match the fictional Swainsons (spotted shells on knitted mats, the old man's songs etc)?

I read once that the real Mary S darned AR's knickerbockers just as Roger has in Swallowdale.
