It's always exciting to be reading a book and find S&A mentioned. In this case, it was Nevil Shute's No Highway, published in 1948. In the book, S&A is being read by a twelve-year old girl. She is being raised by a single father, and as written, she is scientifically knowledgeable, but not very childlike. However, she responds to the adventures of the Swallows and Amazons like any other child, with excitement and joy, and this is really the first sign that she really is a child.
Let me just add- for those of you who haven't tried Nevil Shute yet, I can highly recommend his work. Start with A Town Like Alice, Trustee from the Toolroom, or No Highway.
