Extracts from the book were serialised in The Times, and last Tuesday 21st they carried the picture of AR in Press Corps uniform in the centre of the page. Unlike the copy in Roland Chambers' book, his pipe is clearly visible.
The text looks like a journalist's précis of the book, and after several facts we all know about the Daily News and Evgenia, it goes on:
'A scheme was devised whereby Ransome would leave the Daily News and return to Russia as a representative of the British Museum, with a "private mandate" to "collect all available documents bearing on Bolshevism." Ransome thought that "such a request would enormously flatter the Bolsheviks, and enable him to go everywhere and get anything of this sort."'
This is new to me, though the article goes on to point out that his main achievement in the six weeks was to get Evgenia out of Russia.
