You're right, there's no picture of the camera; I'm sure there's a picture of a camera in one of the books, because I have an image in my mind, 'AR style', of one of the folding Kodaks. The one thing that's absolutely certain is that they were using roll film, as described in detail in the darkroom scene in BS.

AHA! I thought it might be in GN?, and it is. End of Ch XXII, p.279 JC 1948. Doesn't mean much as it's a different story at another time, but it might be that, both times, AR illustrated his own camera, or at least one he had handy. Another thing is, how much more refined and professional AR's illustrations are in GN. But clearly, he learnt as he went along.
