I second Ross's comment about a great post - Ed at his best.

Ransome's books are full of the other sort of 'guideline' as
well: hints and tips as to the correct way to tackle something
as well as an awareness of the dire consequences of not doing
things the right way.

John's unfortunate meeting with Pike Rock has been in my
mind every time I sail with the consequence that unexpected
gybes have been few and far between.

Pigeon Post has left me with a life-long desire to explore
disused mines, the rock fall in the 'Old Level' has taught me
to check all disused levels carefully for any signs of movement
and to treat any suspicious tunnels with the greatest respect.
