What the Greek Navy built was a trireme; ie, it had three banks of rowers. It is instructive to read Tim Severin's two books about his adventures in the monoreme 'Argo', in which he retraced the travels of Jason and the Argonauts, followed by the protracted return home of Oddyseus, as related in Homer's 'Oddysey'. They show what he quickly learned about the management of such craft.
