Arthur Ransome's East Anglia (1988) page 19
Revised edition (2001) page 32.
Walter (father and son) and Herbert Woods — son of 'old Walter as AR called him — at Potter were well-known to AR who had hired both yachts and a cruiser from the yard and he would have passed Southgate's yard at Horning a number of times.
As well as the carefully catalogued letters and other items in The Brotherton Collection and at Abbot Hall there are numerous odd pieces of paper, some with just a couple of sentences, where AR jotted down ideas. On one of these working notes, I came across the names. Why were they never mentioned? Very likely, because AR liked to know more about all his characters than he let on.
