Despite this line I always thought of Captain Flint as being 'relatively' old.

Well he is 'relatively' old. Relative to young children, that is. And in AR's illustrations, he has male pattern baldness, confirmed by the text. That helps make him appear fairly old...

To look authentic, any actor playing him should be stoutish, balding, upper-middle class in voice. He may be a black sheep, a knock-about Latin America adventurer, but he comes across in the books as being jolly respectable, all the same. I'm not well versed enough in actors to suggest anybody, except to say that Bernard Cribbins would probably not do, and for example the Claude Whatham version was fatally holed below the waterline by the use of Ronald Fraser, who never had the weight to carry it off, especially in the voice. Too querulous.

But I do agree that Dawn French as Mrs Blackett would probably work. She'd have to damp down her 'modernness' but she's a fine actress and could do it easily.
