I've sailed sprit rig a fair bit, and while it is a perfectly good rig, I don't like its shortcomings (or what I perceive as its shortcomings). Without a boom (very typical), it doesn't do as well down wind as a comparable boomed gaff or lug rig, and more importantly, while you can brail it up easily, you can't actually douse it --no matter what happens, you will always have canvas aloft providing a squall leverage by which to send you swimming. Better to have your lug's halyard made fast with a slippery hitch: one jerk and your sail is DOWN, not flogging about above your head as it would be with a sprit rig. Even gaff rig, an arguably slower arrangement in such a situation, what with having two halyards (typically), at least the sail actually comes down and ceases to be leverage.

Just my two cents.

Alex
