Here's a very quick rundown of my reactions. Stars of the weekend:
- Christina Hardyment (subbing wittily for Rodney Dingle)
- Wayne Hammond (scholarly discussion of Ransome's might-have-beens.
The Proceedings will be worth getting for this alone).
- Phyllis Hetzel (for her elegant and witty description of the Newnham
of Missee Lee, which gently made fun of AR's misunderstandings).
- Brian Alderson (a discussion of Old Peter etc. that will probably
read better than it was delivered).
- Margaret Ratcliffe (who extended her announced cameo on Ransome's
siblings).
- Libby Purves & Paul Heiney. Very funny: and no, they didn't pretend
to have read AR.
- The meals, both 'informal' and 'formal'.
- Trevor Johnston's S&A bow tie for the Saturday dinner.
One or two disappointments:
- Taqui Altounyan couldn't make the weekend.
- In the Cameo Corner some of the presenters went beyond the limits
for a cameo, with the result that there was no time for discussion at
the end
- No opportunity for general discussion of the format for the Literary
Weekend of 2001.
- The surroundings were imposing, but also pretty noisy at four in the
morning for those of us in rooms overlooking the punting pool (ducks
doing their Peggy impersonations!).
