I have been taking the Amtrak sleeper for several years, now. It is more expensive than flying, but far more comfortable (and the meals are included), and gives me a private place to read or write when I feel like it. That is one of my few true luxuries. The train between DC and NYC are comfortable and fun - used to take it to NYC about every few weeks when I taught at American University.

I have always figured that "getting there was half the fun" - - and why bypass the scenery?
