Dear Mary & Class,
I am not a teacher but when I was younger (I am 22)
I really enjoyed the Swallows & Amazons series so much so I asked
my parents to take me to the (english) lake district where a number
of the books are set. It was 1985 and I was 11. It made quite an
impression on me even though I am british. I now enjoy climbing and
walking and caving and infact I was in the lake district less than
two weeks ago, walking a route known as the coniston horse shoe it was
very foggy that saturday you could not see more than 20 meters,
yet the sunday was a fantastic bright day with light mist over
lake windermere. There was a sail boat race underway and due to the
lack of wind almost becalmed. I reminded me of swallows & amazons.
Anyway you may know that the Old Man of Coniston is Kanchenjunga in
the books, and that alot of the places in the books are real or
combinations of real places I thought maybe your class would be
intrested in this.
There is a book avalable here in the UK I don't know if you can get
it in the states but it shows where the places in the books really
are. It is:- IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS by Claire
Kendall-Price ISBN 0 95211 86 02 published by Wildcat Publishing.
I hope you and your class get as much enjoyment out of the books as
I did when I was their age.

yours sincerely
Nick Hannaford
P.S. my favorite book in the series is Pigeon Post maybe your class
would like to read it next.
