And to be defeatist on this matter; there's no reason why it should be identifiable. Not because AR wanted to keep it secret, but because it's from his imagination, with the bits chosen from places that he knew and loved, to make a location for his novel. For instance, there's frequent description of the road that crosses the Amazon river and then branches off to Beckfoot and the lake road or up the river. I remember, years ago, finding that configuration on an OS map, but there was no suitable Beckfoot nearby. There doesn't need to be- it was a jolly nice device for hearing motor horns and trapping the doctor, and once in AR's mind, it was effectively real.

Even so, I had a lovely time looking for it.

Nowadays, of course, in season the road must be hell, but the past is another country.
