Rob, you have woken my inner mechanical engineer. Was the starter purely mechanical like the pull-chord on a lawn-mower? That would have allowed a battery-less system with magneto ignition. (The lights could have been driven from a generator. I have a vague notion that some early cars used a carbon-pile regulator to keep the lamp voltage constant despite engine speed changes.)
A chain drive permits a lot of suspension movement but did the Trojan have a differential? One incorporated in the gear-box with two chains driving each rear wheel individually would work. Ah, takes me back to my Meccano days.
