Ed - Funny you should mention freeboard. Something which struck me some years ago was that Ransome drew boats with huge freeboards. Many boats appear to be sitting on top of the water rather than floating in it. The Margoletta, for example, has a freeboard that is almost 60% of her beam. (See CC, "On Horning staithe.") I hate to think what this would do for her stability. The Goblin's freeboard is almost Roger's height (See WD, "Morning dip.") but she, at least, has a heavy keel to keep her upright.
Were high freeboards the practice of 1930's boat-builders?
