I think you are absolutely right. This started with personal computer software actually, where the "licenses" that you never could see before you opened the package asserted that you weren't really buying it, just licensing the use of it at the producer's sole convenience, with the right to withdraw the privilege. The underlying assertion is that the purchaser doesn't really own the item purchased, the provider still owns it. DRM is entirely about retaining the ability to exercise that alleged "right" and NOT about "piracy" really. At least in my opinion - as I suggested at the beginning.

As far as a Ransome connection...not sure there is, unless it's Ivy selling off Ransome's library when he was overseas.
