Gaol / jail

Those who aren't on the Facebook group will have missed the previous gaol / jail debate - but I have just noticed that while Captain Flint talks about a "jailer" in Great Northern?, Dorothea talks about a "gaoler" in Picts and the Martyrs. How can we account for this change?
