most of them haven't a clue beyond sending a text message and posting on Facebook (ugh!)

Oh, Facebook isn't so bad. I used to post on Usenet- still do, for tech advice and a couple of 'social' newsgroups, but most of my Usenet friends migrated to Facebook, so after a certain amount of 'ugh!' I did too. And it's been a positive move.

It's quite good at limiting what you see, whose posts you choose to see, but it also enables you to roam, and with the greater capabilities of computers and comms, it's a positive experience. Makes sense. Gives pleasure. The trick being to communicate with people you meet in real life. Not always possible- I have a Usenet friend who lives in Alaska, in the middle of nowhere, who I shall never meet but still value a great deal. As with all these things, it's what you make of it. And Facebook can be excellent. It can also be dreadful, lots of duffers about, but that's true of everything. And at least, as a direct result, nobody drowns.
