That reminds me of my seamanship instructor Petty Officer in the Navy. He insisted the correct pronounciation of tackle was "take-all", but only when applied in the sense of blocks and tackle.

He also maintained that the correct term for laying out ropes in straight lines so they run out more freely than from a coil is "faking" not "flaking". Allegedly the former was used until the spelling was changed in one edition of the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship. What would the Swallows have used?
