I think the use of the word knickerbockers for shorts was fairly common in the first third of the century. I remember my grandmother (she would have been few years younger than AR) telling me that shorts were called knickerbockers "in her day".

I have the impression long socks may still be called stockings in Scotland. Would any Gaels care to comment?
