I'm going to steer clear of topics like the so-called 'class system' and the 'Empire', because I have views which differ totally from those of Peter Ceresole. I think it's important to say that much, in the interests of balance, but I don't want to enter into an argument.

On a lighter note, I wasn't all that shocked by the 2012 'version' of S&A. About 10 years ago, I posted on Tarboard a rewrite of a paragraph from S&A, in which I had 'translated' the dialogue into what I thought was contemporary 'youth-speak'. I don't have a copy of it, but I do recall that I translated - "Aye aye" said Roger into - Roger was like: "Yeah, whatever".

I was reprimanded by a redoubtable Tarboarder from New Zealand, who thought I was sounding like the Great Aunt, so I ended the experiment then and there. The NZ correspondent may have had a point, although I think there are worse examples to follow than the Great Aunt. In fact, it's a funny thing, but as I grow older I find I am less and less irritated by the G.A. I think occasionally she had a point, too.
