I too was at school during the time AR was writing. We certainly knew the word "knickerbockers", though I'm uncertain if we used it. Quite probably it was the word in the list of necessary clothing issued to parents.
We definitely wore "stockings" in winter. Thick grey socks coming up nearly to the knee, with the top turned over an elastic garter.
And yes, this put me off shorts for life. I can remember my first pair of long trousers at age 11, for special occasions only.
