The following lists may be American rather than British, but they show that Ransome generally picked quite common names for his characters and those less common ones, such as Susan and Titty, can almost all be connected to the Altounyan family or other people he knew. Nancy is related to Anne or Anna, so I don't think he had any naughty intent.

Dick and Peggy have been well known nicknames for Richard and Margaret for a long time.
