I don't have my copy of GN with me, but I seem to recollect that the egg collector, Mr Jemmerling, is shown in one of the illustrations wearing a very natty pair of (american) knickerbockers. I mentin this because, if my memory has not misled me, it eliminates the possibility that AR meant knickerbockers but his artistic skills were only up to depicting shorts!!!
