You said:
"calm down". It's not a phrase that I or many people I know would use,
but it can be addressed to persons of either gender.>
Now what I need to know, being a denizen of the new world and all, is
WHY you and your friends wouldn't use it. The obvious reason is because
it is vulgar. Or is it because it is kind of 'old-fashioned' - like
calling a refrigerator an icebox? Or because it would sound out-of-place
coming from you, as if I tried to use teen-age slang? Or maybe there is
some other, unthought-of reason not to use the phrase. Would I get in
trouble if I were to say it to the Queen? Or, more likely for me, to a
nun?
Inquiring minds want to know.
