It does look as though Polly and Gibber were invented as a good way to end SA, but that they weren't necessary elements in later books, so were quietly discarded- Polly to be a provider of green feathers off screen so to speak, and Gibber to the zoo, not to be seen again until his starring- indeed pivotal- role in ML. There he was all right in a meta story, but was hard to work into AR's chosen form of the 'realistic children's story in England'.
Oh dear- now I'm going to be revealed as a superficial reader who's missed a hundred references... But what is Tarbord for if not to be put right?
