I've suggested in Outlaw that Lake Bank waiting room, built by the Furness Railway at the south end of Coniston, if not a precise North Pole, makes a decent 'South Pole'.
Nicely spotted, yes. I think what this thread demonstrates is that the NP was drawn from a whole lot of local structures, summer houses, waiting rooms etc, but none an exact match, and at no actual location, outside of AR's head.
Which is as it should be. After all what we enjoy and celebrate here, is the richness of his imagination- and his superb style which translates that imagination from his mind to ours. On each re-read, the first page of Ransome is like dipping a hand in the lake in greeting.
