The American illustrator and author Robert Lawson wrote several children's books about famous people from their companion animals' point of view; the first of these was Ben and Me about Benjamin Franklin, told from the point of view of his mouse Amos. These were generally very witty and the humans usually came off rather punctured as far as pretensions go. See Wikipedia: Robert Lawson.
