I bought the hardback; I must be mad, but that's all that was on offer
Well, it arrived this morning, in an Amazon box large enough for a fridge and two TV sets. And yes, it is jolly big. And, I must say, beautiful. A real, shiny slab, nicely produced with absolutely splendid pictures. Not surprisingly I've seen many of the 'boats and lakes' pictures before; the Internet and TARS make that inevitable, but there are lots of good pictures- friends and family, places lived in, Ivy, the Collingwoods- which I hadn't seen and which I find fascinating. And for instance Hardyment has chased down his London addresses and I was surprised to discover that I had for several years lived in Chelsea where he had lived as a young man, and recognised the houses because I'd walked past them many times.
But when I said I must be mad, I was right. I want to read it all, now, because Hardyment has a good journalistic instinct for a story and she's clearly on form here. Normally I have paperbacks, slip them into a pocket and read peripatetically- in various rooms, at my local cafe, on the bus. But that's definitely not on here- I'll have to read it in planned sessions in planned places... This is going to take some time.
But... The pictures are gorgeous and I'm very happy with it.
Oh yes, and the cover is 'Cape' style, and looks very good.
