There is of course the importance of gold at that time (still is actually), the financial crises of the 1920s and 30s showed to the general public how gold mattered – when currencies falter then owning gold bars is the best thing to do. Newspapers and newsreels would have had pictures of stacks of ingots, and so to the SADs this is what gold was all about.
To be able to show CF a bar of it when he got home from his, to them, pointless travels would be a triumph. They were of course children, and AR drew them as being sensible and organised but they still hankered after the stuff of story books - pirates always have stashes of gold bars, and wouldn't this be exactly what Nancy would want? (I seem to remember it is she who drives the whole thing forward!)
