I didn't mention it in my original post but what sealed the case for a petrol engine was the line, "John could even see the remains of a tea spread on the table in the little cabin amidships."
Unless you have a taste for ash and coal-dust sandwiches that rather rules out having a steam engine in the cabin. A petrol engine, a 50 cc two-stroke would be sufficient, could presumably be hidden below the aft cockpit sole.
