Oh, I do agree with you.

From what I read about him, AR doesn't strike me as being very religious; also, the books were set in holiday time, so the children didn't need to think about it. But if they were at 'normal' English schools, in term time they would have found it very hard to avoid. I was at an English boarding school in the '50s and have suffered through the infinite tedium of Sunday chapel more times than I care to remember. And every morning there was an assembly where we sang hymns. That was the only positive side of the whole business; I have a friend who manages a singing ensemble in Geneva, and when we visit him and his wife, which we often do, he and I finish up bawling hymns, built into every English child who went to boarding school. Good Victorian sentiments set to serious German style tunes. Wonderfully cathartic.
