Growing up in Maryland, I found the Ransome books in our local public library in the early 1950s; I was perhaps 11. I think the dust jackets initially caught my eye. I made a practice for years afterwards whenever I was visiting somewhere to go to the library and see if they had the S&A books. My parents had never heard of him unsurprisingly (this was America after all), and I never met anyone else who had read them until long after I was an adult, although clearly the books in the local library when I first found them were being checked out (those were the days of a pasted-in sleeve at the back with rubber stamped dates when the book went out, and a place for the index card).
